John Cody is consummate professional with an incredible vision for creativity combined with a strong business acumen. Creative and Dreams is honored to welcome him in our unique family of outstanding world talents.
John began his career in public accounting and on Wall Street working for Charter NY. He is a CPA and holds a BBA from Pace University and an MBA from Long Island University where he was a member of Delta Mu Delta honor society.
John is a veteran of USAF where he served his country as a communication specialist with a top-secret security clearance for more than four years. He successfully completed six months of complex technical training at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas.
John’s unique skills are perhaps rooted in his comprehensive, business-related university education, which covered the gamut of finance, accounting, economics, information technology and other broad-based business curriculum. This was complemented by his successful completion of the formal sophisticated technical training with the USAF.
During his tenure with Ericsson telecom, John was promoted several times culminating with his appointment as VP and CFO for the U.S. headquarters, the youngest CFO is the company’s history. His accomplishments included efficiently implementing the replacement of various legacy systems that added appreciable value to the infrastructure. He instituted a dynamic market-based leasing program that boosted telecom sales in various key markets and diminished marketing risks.
As VP/Controller of the Hearst Book Group, he championed innovative I/T projects that yielded attractive ROIs for both the hardcover and paperback operations. John also led and grew the project management efforts across the company, which favorably impacted results. On the creative side, he played a significant role in structuring/vetting deals on the acquisitions of major titles for publication. A mini P&L was required for every material title being considered for acquisition, which considerably reduced risk.
In 1999, John joined Broadcast Music Inc. as SVP and CFO. Once again John rapidly ascended the ranks, being named COO in 2002 and appointed the first-ever EVP by the Board of Directors in 2006. Among other things John was heavily involved in key negotiations and building revenues. During his tenure, total revenues doubled, and under his leadership, revenues grew in virtually every major business segment. All of this was accomplished while total company headcount remained essentially flat. John also founded the Corporate Security Operations Committee (CSOC), which under his guidance successfully completed hundreds of projects geared predominantly toward protecting the franchise and reducing risks.
Since February 2011, John has been serving on the Board of Directors for Gannett, a leading worldwide media company. He was appointed Chair of Gannett’s Audit Committee in October 2011. He is a member of the Ernst & Young Tapestry group, which is comprised of Audit Chairs from major public companies.
John served on the Tennessee Performing Arts Center (TPAC) board from 2007 to 2016 and as board chair from 2010 to 2012. He chaired many committees and currently sits on TPAC’s Advisory Council.
