Creative and Dreams Music Network and Fred Cannon are proud to welcome producer and songwriter Paul Buono to its diverse family of professionals.
Over the past 15 years, Paul Buono has produced more than 100 independent records and has written and or co-written more than 250 published songs. Originally from Boston, he attended Berklee College of Music before relocating to Nashville to become a producer and songwriter.
Buono joined Creative and Dreams Music Network after Cannon heard a session he had produced, and then reached out to him during a trip to Nashville. Although he didn’t have an artist in mind for Buono to work with at the time, Cannon appreciated Buono’s ability to get in tune with each artist’s style, regardless of their musical genre. Shortly after their meeting, Cannon met Chastity Brown and connected her with Buono, who produced her first album with Creative and Dreams Music Network with Cannon as executive producer and co-producer. Through his close collaboration with Brown and Cannon, he was able to set the correct mood and feel for the critically acclaimed Back-Road Highways. Buono also co-wrote “House Been Burnin” with Brown.
“Paul has an incredible ability to craft and restructure a good song,” Cannon said. “It is extremely hard to find such a able song craftsman. He is one of the best I have ever worked with.”
Since the completion of Back-Road Highways, Buono has worked on many other Creative and Dreams Music Network productions with artists such as Erisa Rei, KT Ryder and Lisa Love. His goal is to always help the artist achieve their own musical style, so that when the listener hears the artist’s music, they instantly identify it as that particular artist’s sound instead of a Paul Buono production.
“People do not buy records by looking to see who produced it,” Buono said. “They buy only the sound and style of the artists they love. The biggest part that makes up the sound of the artist is obviously the vocals, which is the artist’s most valuable and most identifiable asset. It’s not the accompanying orchestration or production style, though they are vital elements in helping to package and deliver the artist’s sound. People still ultimately buy the voice, not the guitar or drum sounds. That’s why I place a huge emphasis on the vocals in my productions.”
When working with an artist, Buono spends a lot of time with them in preproduction to make sure they have the right song to record. His goal is usually to write 20 or 30 songs in order to have 10 or 12 for a record.
“People will always buy songs they love – songs that move them emotionally,” Buono said. “A great song can be produced a hundred different ways and still be great, while a bad or mediocre song will continue to be so even with the most spectacular production around it. I’m not trying to underestimate the power of great production, and I’ll always strive to achieve [great production] in my work. I’m just trying to refocus on the critical basic elements of our favorite records – Timeless songs sung by great artists with voices we love to listen to over and over again.”

“It all starts with a creative dream.” – Fred Cannon
People do not buy records by looking to see who produced it. They buy only the sound and style of the artists they love. The biggest part that makes up the “sound” of the artist is obviously the “vocals” which is their most valuable and most identifiable asset. It’s not the accompanying orchestration or production style though that’s a vital element in the helping to package and deliver that artists “sound”. People still ultimately buy the”voice” not the guitar or drum sounds. That’s why I place a huge emphasis on the vocals in my productions.
The final piece of the puzzle is last and not least “the songs”. I spend a lot of time in preproduction with the artist making sure that we have the right song to record. This typically means writing twenty to thirty songs to find ten or twelve for a record. We all have our list of favorite songs of all time. People will always buy songs that they love, songs that move them emotionally. A great song can be produced a hundred different ways and still be great. Where as a bad or mediocre song will continue to be so even with the most spectacular production around it.
I’m not trying to underestimate the power of great production and I’ll always strive to achieve that in my work. I’m just trying to refocus on the critical basic elements of all our favorite records. Great timeless songs sung by great artists with voices we love to listen to over and over again.
