Fred Cannon and Creative and Dreams Music Network, LLC presents Barry Alldis, “Maker of the Stars”, even known as “The King of Norway”, was a household name from Radio Luxembourg 208, known to millions, as “Your DJ BA”.
Words from his daughter Janet Alldis:
Listeners across the globe tuned into his show nightly, as did I, but for a different reason. Daddy’s comforting warm voice soothed me to sleep under the covers in the darkness of my boarding school dormitory.
Dad’s unexpected death in 1982 left a hollow ache in my heart. Millions of people knew his voice, but who was the man behind the microphone? A quest started and a book was published: “Under The Bedclothes”.
Born in Newcastle, Australia in December 1930, Barry Alldis’ love for music started at the tender age of 6, primarily with piano and then trumpet. As a young man exploring London in the early 50’s, he often hung out at Ronnie Scott’s. His big break in radio came in 1956 when dad became Mr. Top Twenty on Radio Luxembourg, with a staggering global audience of 12 million listeners!
After giddy success on Radio Luxembourg, Dad accepted the BBC’s offer to be part of the fledgling BBC Radio 1 team in 1967. Exciting times followed on Radio 1 and 2 with Dad covering a variety of shows. Ten years later, Dad took our family back to Luxembourg, where he felt the happiest and once again became a household name on 208 until he signed off one final time that fateful night in November 1982 with his catchphrase signature “Whether at home or on the highway, thanks for tuning my way”.
Dad’s life was filled with a love of music. He composed over a hundred songs, many of which were published and recorded. Dad’s songs were heard on the BBC, performed by the BBC Radio Orchestra. Dad also had contracts with Ronnex records and the Decca records. His single releases were “Tell Me Again”, “Tender Things”, “Go Get It” and “Don’t Go”.
Well dad, sadly you “Did Go” and you left me with the need to fill an unexplained emptiness, the need to express my feelings firstly through a book – and now through music, for music tells a story.
This song “Under the covers” is my personal heart felt story.
Thank you to David Stark, editor of SongLink.
